Facilitating team events

Awaydays have a bad reputation. Often, they are short-lived bursts of energy and innovation which are quickly forgotten when people get back to ‘proper’ work.

Part of our purpose is to change this perception. We want people to view awaydays as valuable ‘connecting pieces’ in the ongoing development of the team’s business that:

  • Enable real work and high quality thinking.
  • Produce practical outcomes.
  • Provide a safe place where people can learn new skills.
  • Allow people to think the unthinkable.
  • Start to build people’s confidence in using new techniques which can then be used in the office to make day-to-day operations more energising, liberating and enjoyable.

To ensure outcomes are achieved to best effect while enabling people to get to know one another better and build more trust between them, our approach is always to:

  • Establish the overall purpose of the event.
  • Ask clients how they want to feel at the end, illustrating that we practise what we preach and use more liberating thinking techniques right from the start.
  • Use the client’s answer as the basis for agreeing the questions that need to be answered by people on the day and the supporting information required.
  • Plan the best way to design the facilitation.

Our techniques are for life not just awaydays. People can take them back as an added bonus to help maintain the same level of energy they will experience on the day.

Case studies

Magic of the opening round
The group had been meeting for several months in a formal – almost select committee – format. But they had not gelled as a team.

The power of assumptions
The purpose of the group was to examine and re-define what it means to be a medical professional. So I asked the group this question:

About our work

"Judy worked with the PCT board to set foundations and approaches for the transformation that they were embarking upon and was commissioned to deliver a programme - "From Strategy to Reality" - which she designed to develop the skills knowledge of middle managers from the merging organisations. She also succeeded in the goal of empowering them to work better as leaders. Evaluations of this programme were first–rate."
